Our final webinar of this series concluded with Rosie Dickinson talking us through juicing and the importance of the best quality natural ingredients, the methods of juicing, and how juicing fits into a healthy lifestyle or can be used as a cleanse.

Rosie began the webinar by explaining how the 5 a day of fruit and vegetables per the Recommended Dietary Allowance, is not enough. This is because, since the early 1900s, soil health has declined due to over-farming and the use of synthetics. Therefore there are fewer minerals in whole foods.

What is juice?

Rosie defined juice as the “liquid extracted from fruits, vegetables, herbs and grasses which contain nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and enzymes”.

The misconceptions of juicing

Rosie began by addressing the main misconceptions of juicing.

  1. Lack of fiber - yes it does like fiber however, how much fiber you need in a day depends on the other fruit and vegetables in your diet. If you are eating fruit and vegetables then you are already getting your fiber.
  2. Sugar spikes - As long as your juice is not too sweet then this will not be an issue.
  3. Waste - The more efficient the juicing machine than the less waste there is. Also, items like root vegetables don’t require peeling, just give them a wash and they are good to go in the juicer. Alternatively, you can reissue the trimmings to make things like vegetable broth or granola, or perhaps feed them to your pets, as long as they are safe for them. As well as using any waste for compost.

What is juice cleansing?

Rosie explained that juice cleansing is a short-term detoxification program that replaces food with a series of juice and nut milk that is consumed in a set order. It allows for key nutrients to be released so that toxins can be flushed out whilst supporting the liver.

Why detox?

The average person is contaminated by 300 man-made toxins every day such as co2 and cortisol (stress), as well as toxins that are present in the environment such as those in the air, through everyday cleaning products and aerosols, etc. Therefore juice cleansing provides the nutrients needed to release the toxins.

Testing for toxins

There are numerous ways that we can test ourselves for toxins such as testing our hair for metals and urine samples to test for plastics and chemicals.

Rosie then talked us through some of the endless benefits of juicing.

Why not just take supplements?

Rosie explained how this is one of the main questions that people ask when it comes to the health benefits of juicing. However, food-based supplements are always best as you need to be careful when you are looking towards supplements as may contain fillers such as talc.

Finally, Rosie concluded with a quote from Arianna Huffington that sums up juicing perfectly, “when we’re recharged, we’re no longer at the mercy of our survival instincts and we operate from a place of strength and calm”.
